After decades in management, we have found that there is one subject that regularly tops the agenda at meetings with our client committees and resident associations of larger blocks ... and that is the porter.

Where a porter is good, residents will bend over backwards to keep him. Where the porter is bad, there is endless handwringing on how to remove or retire him within the confines of employment legislation.

This is why, as professional managers, we have made it our business to bring out the best in our porterage staff.  We achieve this through group training sessions where they come into contact with porters from many of our other blocks. These take place at a central London venue, where our hired experts provide instruction in Health & Safety, Fire Risk, Emergency First Aid at Work, Manual Handling, Staff Management for Head Porters, Appropriate Reporting and Communication.

We lay on a decent lunch and refreshments to encourage lively interaction and exchange of ideas and common problems, such as problem tenants or parking abuses or simply to vent their frustrations among peers. They later receive certificates as proof of their training and achievement level.

Parkgate-Aspen porters come away from these sessions informed, enthused and with a sense of purpose and value that comes with greater job-satisfaction and from the whole team experience.

I appreciate having the time to think beyond my normal routine and gain beneficial skills too.  With my newly attained 3 year certificate in Emergency First Aid, I was able to react appropriately when my young child started choking.  These really are vital tools.
